Copsing

As winter draws on (fnuh, fnuh) we have to meet early to see what we are doing now.
We will meet at 5pm-7pm at Leaton HOME Farm (where we usually do our eco work) to clear scrub, plant trees and make a copse - nice! Its early so will probably mean some careful lift coordination - if you want to come but don't have a lift, and don't know the other scouts phone numbers to help arrange, give me/Peter/Phil a call. If you are a bit late, then we will be up the hill one field south-east of the meeting point in the map below (you may well hear us from the meeting point)
We will meet at the lower car park which you reach if you turn in at the lower driveway to visit the house (Garden Cottage) but carry straight on down following the angling club signs - see map!

Bring:
long sleeves
long thick trousers
gloves
enthusiasm
wellies or hike boots
fork or spade if you can
green fingers

AY AY CAPTAIN
The patrol leaders and assistants who didn't go to the SSGMG Caving Camp were invited to the District Patrol Leaders Camp at the Wrekin Scout Camp Site. They did some map and compass work. Good job as even TomToms Ozzy Osbourne struggled to find the place. Can you imagine a campsite with no Postcode in this day and age!

Anyway we found it in good time and had a couple of minutes reflection before being split up into patrols with other groups.

Keep scouting
Our autumn camp will be here in the castle! (get it - 'keep' scouting...!)

We are actually going to take over the East Tower of the gatehouse and defend St Briavels Castle against all assault!
We will be there from Wednesday 28 October to Friday 30 October during half term as usual. It is quite difficult to book a Norman Keep so I have guessed numbers and need to confirm asap!!!
I have not been able to confirm costs yet but it is likely to be about £45 (which seems to be my favourite number for a troop camp these days). I'll be aiming to book activities from mountain biking in the forest/canoeing in the Wye/climbing on the Yat/hiking in the hills/caving in the exciting scary dark places below...! If you want to come and have a preference let me know (we aim to please!)
I will try and phone everyone in the next few days...

Bert3E rides again!

It's time to dust off those myblocks, check out the gears and resurect Bert2E, phoenix-like, from the lego heap! Go Bert3E!!!
We will have a preliminary meeting of all ro-boreateers and wanabee roboreatteers (new scouts especially welcomed and encouraged! - come with shiny new ideas!) at my house tomorrow September 16 from 7pm-8pm to introduce the game and the project and check all the kit still works. Don't worry if you absolutely can't make it - we will sort out the main programme for the robotics at our troop night and select the team there, but if you can make it tomorrow it will help us hit the ground running.

Hey - I got it together this term!
Monday, 7 September 2009
What a shower!
We went out with the more experienced scouts (who have moved up from Boreatton! - I need some more of you to come to SSGMG activities so I can justify going myself!) to do some more techie caves - but they got it all the wrong way round!
(which was a bit too wet to rig the ladders to go all the way down, so then...
...then they went for a muddy crawl through Carlswark...
Oh well at least they managed to share the task of carrying the gear sensibly...
This is where we went... (cave surveys from www.cerberusspeleo.org.uk/surveys.htm )
Thanks for taking us underground again Idris!

Important bits

OK the last post was a bit wordy so here's the key bits...
France and caving photos are in Al's public photo albums
Troop nights start at PGL 8:00-9:30 Fridays from 18-9-09
PLs have a camp 19-20 September and need to give me the forms from the last post THIS WEEK
SSGMG are running a caving camp the same w/e 18-20 September for those that join in SSGMG events and you need to let me know if you want to come by THURSDAY
Autumn!
...has arrived - ulp! that means I'm late getting all the info on the blog...
It's a busy term ahead - we have our usual prog to sort out, the Rifle squad need to finish their NSRA qualifications before going to the NSARC camp, the Ro-boreatteers need to get themselves together and start work on BERT3E, PLs have a special training camp, the Drum Corps need to get ready for Remembrance Parade, SSGMG members need to sign up for the caving weekend in Cae Hopkin...
New (and old) scouts can join up for the robotics with the ro-boreateers and with the Drum Corps. I'm afraid the rifle squad had to organise last term so you know if you are in contention for a place in the squad already, and PLs have already been appointed for this term so only they are eligible for the PL training camp (APLs as reserves).
The SSGMG is open to all scouts 12 or over, but as it's very popular, places at the caving camp are given to regular attendees at the SSGMG events first. If you want to try these activities - check out the SSGMG link and ask to come along, then you'll be at the front of the queue next year! We will be having a go at caving in the troop night prog anyway, 'cos I enjoy it, and am qualified to take you under Llanymynech (it's very dark and muddy - great!) Check out the link for the caving we did yesterday! and you can also see all the France camp photos on my web album now
Scout troop nights start on 18 Sept as usual, I'll post up start times for the robotics, drum corp and rifle squad once I know what I'm at, and get a full prog blog out soon too. PLs need to get me consent/medical forms asap as they need to be with the county organisers before SATURDAY (ulp!) here they are!

SSGMG members wanting to go caving need to let me know asap as let them know by FRIDAY!!! Info as follows...
